Risk Management in Water Resources

BACKGROUND

Institute of Water and Flood Management and the Directorate of Continuing Education, Bangladesh university of Engineering and Technology are announcing a Short Course on "Risk Management in Water Resources" for continued professional development. This programme addresses a broad spectrum of issues like fundamental risk management concepts, risk management issues, analysis of risks, risk based approach in water resources planning, water related risk assessment and management, etc.

This course is designed for water related public and private sector senior professionals, with several years working experience in the field, to enhance their knowledge about the basic concepts of Risk Management and how it can be applied in water resources sectors. It is suitable for professionals having need of addressing risk related issues in water sector.

The course derives its excellence from the experience of a collaborative RISKPLAN Project among the following four international universities with the sponsorship of European Union, Asia-Link Programme:

  • Institute of Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh,
  • CARISMA (Centre for the analysis of Risk and Optimization Modeling Applications), Brunel University, UK,
  • School of Education Technology, Jadavpur University, India,
  • Department of Statistics and Decision Support, University of Vienna, Austria.

OBJECTIVES

A participant, after attending the course is expected to acquire the following skills:

  • Appreciate the general principle of Risk Management and articulate the specific risk related issues in water related areas.
  • Critically analyze and comment upon the soundness of a risk analysis report or risk abatement plan in water sector.
  • Identify risks in one’s application domain, incorporate risk management approach, and in routine situations, recommend planning and operational actions taking cognizance to applicable regulating requirement and accepted best practices.
  • Identify the needs of further professional education for self and team members.
  • Identify when expert help would be required and utilize such help to solve more complex risk related problems.

CONTENTS

Risk perception, analysis and management; Risk-based approach in water resources planning; Flood Hazard Analysis; Drought risk assessment and management; Rive Erosion Risk Management; Water quality risk management; Risk in urban water management; Ecological risk due to climate change; Possible risk in water resources system modeling; Risk based information and dissemination system.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This short course is for those who are involved and interested in planning, design, development and management of water resources and other allied natural resources. Apart from engineers, physical scientists working in government, semi-government, private organizations, and NGOs, agriculturists, economists, social scientists, environmentalists, environmental lawyers and educators are encouraged to attend the course.

RESOURCE PERSONS

Resource persons for the short course have been selected from IWFM of BUET.

DURATION

The short course will be offered during 13-14 March, 2010.

VENUE

The venue is the Directorate of Continuing Education (DCE), BUET, Dhaka located on the third floor of the Institute Building of BUET (near Dr. M. A. Rashid Hall and BUET Gymnasium).

LAST DATE OF APPLICATION

Nominations and applications for participation in the short course should reach the Directorate, DCE by 8 March, 2009.

COURSE FEE

Tk. 3,500/- payable in advance for each participant in favour of Director, BRTC, BUET.
