The Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of this university. This department started functioning right after  BUET's coming into existence in 1962. This department offers basic and advanced courses in Mathematics for the undergraduate and postgraduate students in different faculties of the University. The  standard of the courses offered to the undergraduate students are comparable to that of any other university of the world. For the postgraduate students of the faculties of Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, advanced courses in mathematics related to their own fields of interest are offered in mathematics. The academic council of the university entrusted this department to introduce Master of Philosophy and PhD courses in Mathematics. This department is offering M. Phil courses since 1986.

Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Maleque is the present head of this department.
